Writing the perfect page title is still a VERY IMPORTANT part of effective Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Page titles are the first thing seen in searches. The above image from Google shows page titles in blue. Google took exactly what I searched for and displayed these results on page one.
<title>Your Keyword-Rich, Descriptive Page Title Here</title>
Chicago Personal Injury Attorney, Illinois Medical Malpractice (62 Characters)
Brooklyn Plastic Surgeon, NY Breast Augmentation, Liposuction New York (70 Characters)
Dallas Auto Repair Shop & Automotive Mechanics – Cars, Trucks, Vans (67 Characters)
While you can write a page title that is much longer, most search engines cut off after 70 characters, and some only allow as few as 60 characters. Don’t forget that spaces are included in the character count.
Additionally, your page title is a link in search results, as shown above. Use concise titles and avoid keyword stuffing as you have the potential to be blacklisted.
Include what your clients will be searching for. If you have a particular term that would be most relevant, include that.
Use a divider
When splitting up the brand from the descriptive, I like to use the “|” symbol (aka the pipe bar). Others choose the arrow “>” or hyphen “-” and both work well.
