Writing the perfect title tag is still a very important part of effective SEO. Title tags are the first thing seen in searches, where Google displays your website’s page titles in blue.
The Basics
- Between 60 and 75 characters, about 7 words
- Must be different on each page
- Must be relevant to that page
A few examples:
Chicago Personal Injury Attorney | Illinois Medical Malpractice
(63 characters)
Brooklyn Plastic Surgeon, NY Breast Augmentation, Liposuction New York
(70 characters)
Dallas Auto Repair Shop & Automotive Mechanics — Cars, Trucks, Vans
(67 characters)
Title Tags — Best Practices
While you can write a title tag that is much longer, most search engines cut off after 70 characters, based on width (where a “w” is wider than an “i”). Don’t forget that spaces are included in the character count, too. You will see that search engines use an ellipsis to mark that they’ve cut off additional text, which is not considered in your page ranking.
Additionally, your title tag is a link in search results, as shown in blue on search engines.
- Use Concise Titles and avoid keyword stuffing as you have the potential to be blacklisted
- Include Terms your Clients/Customers will be Search For — what would be the most relevant?
- Do you Need your Business Name? The main goal of SEO is to attract people who don’t know you, so including your business name may not be the best use of valuable space
- Use a Divider — when splitting up elements, use the “|” symbol (also known as the pipe bar). The arrow “>” or hyphen “-” or comma all work well.
